BACKGROUND:
The first time we actually meet Jin Zixuan, he makes an impression...just not a very good one. He shows up at an inn in Caiyi Town with a literal entourage of servants who promptly kick everyone else out. Unfortunately that included Jiang Yanli from Yunmeng, the girl he'd been engaged to since childhood, as well as her two brothers.
This is just the kind of entitled life that Jin Zixuan had lived thus far, as the only son of Jin Guangshan, leader of the Lanling Jin Sect. The only legitimate son, anyway, which somehow makes him worthy. Growing up in Jinlintai, Zixuan was surrounded by all the wealth, education and training that one would expect to be available to a sect leader's son. Caiyi Town was a stop on the way to Cloud Recesses, where Jin Zixuan was to take lessons from the GusuLan Clan.
There, he managed to be flashy in front of Lan Qiren, but also found a way of tangling with Wei Wuxian for a second time. After Zixuan embarrassed Yanli during a lantern ceremony, he let it be known that their engagement was not by his wish and he didn't want to hear about it. A fistfight broke out between the two boys, which resulted in both being punished. Zixuan's father and Fengmian Jiang were also called to Cloud Recesses. In the aftermath, the engagement was called off.
After returning to Lanling, Jin Zixuan was called to Qishan for "indoctrination" along with the sons and brothers of the other sect leaders. When given the outrageous order to turn over their swords to the Wens, Zixuan resisted, warning Wen Chao that he was taking things too far. It was only through Mianmian, another Jin Sect disciple, that he was able to keep himself out of the dungeon at the very least. Later, it was only through Jin Zixuan that Mianmian was kept from being strung up and bled out as monster bait. This was the moment when all the disciples finally fought against the bullying Wen clan. The clash ended with them being trapped in the cave with the monster, though everyone but Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji were ultimately able to make their escape through an opening in the cave.
With Cloud Recesses destroyed and Yunmeng too far away, Jin Zixuan took Jiang Cheng to Langling. Once there, he convinced his father to join with the other Sects and rebel against the Wens. He also gathered reinforcements and returned for Wei Wuxian alongside his brother, proving that he had some substance along with his flash.
The massacre at Lotus Pier and the murders of Fengmian Jiang and Madame Yu truly motivated the remaining three great clans to overthrow the Wen sect. Even with three pieces of the powerful Yin metal in Wen Ruohan's possession, the Sunshot Campaign is a success, largely thanks to the new and improved(?) Wei Wuxian and his Stygian Tiger Amulet. But there was someone else who played a part in everything - Meng Yao, Jin Guangshan's illegitimate son and Zixuan's half-brother. From that point forward Meng Yao becomes known as Jin Guangyao and is tentatively welcomed back into the family.
After the dust settled, Jin Zixuan's father wastes no time in doing two things: subtly getting the Lanling Jin Sect into a place of power and trying to rekindle the engagement between Yanli and Zixuan. She politely refuses, as Lotus Pier is still in ruins and needs her. But when Zixuan later comes there to personally extend his mother's invitation to the night hunt that the Jin clan is hosting, she agrees.
What seems like the perfect opportunity between them goes wrong once again, and it's all because of Zixuan's inability to be honest about his feelings and Wei Wuxian's interference to defend his sister's. Things go from bad to worse with the arrival of Zixuan's cousin, Jin Zixun who aggravates the situation with Wei Wuxian even more. Soon, even Zixuan's mother arrives, along with seemingly the disciple of every clan to witness. In a desperate attempt to be understood, Zixuan starts to come clean about the truth of his feelings, only to get flustered halfway through. He ends up running away from everyone, making the night hunt something of a disaster.
Most everyone gathers back at Jinlintai, where the subject of the day turns to one Wei Wuxian. Mianmian, one of the only voices of reason, speaks up on his behalf. She is insulted as a result, and angrily secedes from the Jin clan. Jin Zixuan is visibly shaken by this, and maybe it's just the kick he needs to not lose someone else who's meaningful to him. Zixuan starts turning the courtyard of Jinlintai into a small replica of Lotus Pier, complete with ponds and lotus flowers amidst the peonies. His hope is that it will convince her to stay there with him.
PERSONALITY:
As the only legitimate male heir to the Lanling Jin Sect, Jin Zixuan is used to the finer...no, the finest things in life. Share an inn with others? That's for normal people. Drink stale tea? What is he, an animal? Jin Zixuan is a cultivator who uses mosquito repellent, so he definitely comes across as spoiled. He can also be quite smug about it, though this shows itself more through his general demeanor than outright saying that he's better than you. The Jin are an ostentatious clan, and Jin Zixuan is used to being admired, whether it's for his family's wealth or his skills or his good looks.
Just don't let that fool you into thinking that he's soft as a result of any of this. Suihua is not for decoration. He might not have a lot to say to those he deems below him, but he was the first young master at the Qishan Wen Sect's indoctrination who refused to hand over his sword. And he was prepared to draw it against the entire Sect before Mianmian de-escalated the situation. It's during his time there that we really see Lan Zixuan's bold and courageous side. We also see that he cares about his subordinates, particularly Mianmian, as he defended her more than once against Wen Chao. As for those who would've harmed her to save their own necks, they were quickly shamed by him. The Jin clan is expected to be Better.
It almost sounds romantic, except Jin Zixuan is clueless when it comes to actual romance in his life, and even a bit naive. He struggles when it comes to admitting his true feelings, and Yanli suffered the most for it. Even with such a gentle person, Zixuan just couldn't come right out and say that his wishes with her were his own, and instead claimed they were more his mother's in order to save his "cool" persona. He is also easily tricked by another girl who would've claimed Yanli's good deed as her own. When the truth of how he felt finally did come out, it came with its own set of struggles (not to mention an audience). Zixuan ultimately couldn't deal with it and literally ran away. It was only through actions that he started getting his message across to her, and finally helped him overcome an almost incurable case of foot-in-mouth disease.
Though his clan has a reputation for their etiquette, Zixuan is also an extremely proud individual who won't be pushed too far. He knows how to walk and how to act and how to speak - until someone pushes his buttons, and then he becomes as aggressive as a boy not born of the gentry. (And boy, does Wei Wuxian know how to push those buttons.) He may be polite on the surface, but he's plenty capable of disdainful looks and thoughts and even throwing some fists if you wanna take it there.
Saving face remains an important thing to him, and Zixuan will alter his words and actions in order to do it. This is a huge weakness for him. Personal encounters, especially with Yanli would have gone very differently from the start if he hadn't worried so much about it. He is extremely awkward when it comes to emotions in general, but rather than ask for help, he instead gets angry when others get involved in his business. Fortunately, Zixuan has shown that he's capable of getting better about this and maturing emotionally.
For all his flaws and peacock ways, Jin Zixuan is, at his core, a decent man in many ways. He spoke up when Wei Wuxian was being whipped at the hands of Wen Chao. It didn't matter that he didn't particularly like him, he still liked Wen Chao less, and there are certain lines that shouldn't be crossed. He is also the one who convinced his father to turn against the Wen Sect, even though it was suggested earlier that the Lanling Jin Sect was in better standing with them than the others. He traveled with Jiang Cheng nonstop for a week in order to save Wei Wuxian, and immediately turned into the world's biggest tsundere about it.
He also shows respect to those who deserve it, including his father's illegitimate son, Jin Guangyao, his own half-brother. Zixuan speaks up on his behalf, only to be reminded by his father of the dangers that he could pose to his position. During The Sunshot Campaign battles, Zixuan even goes so far as to chase crows away from a fallen cultivator's body. For every unlikable trait in Jin Zixuan's personality, there is something worthy of admiration. He's not lecherous like his father, not shady like his brother, and that will unfortunately cost him everything.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
cultivation: Using the golden core that he has built inside of him, Jin Zixuan can use his spiritual energy along with his sword to deal with ghosts and baddies. It benefits him as well, making him slightly stronger, faster, and more resilient than those who don't practice this. He can also use this energy to heal and make talismans (of paper or in the air itself using this energy) for various other things such as making fire, protective wards, etc. He is basically a sorcerer with excellent swordsmanship and nice hair.
archery: Jin Zixuan is also shown to be a skilled archer, hitting a bullseye with human obstacles without breaking a sweat.
